ABOUT MATEUS

Mayra Mateus

THE PIGGYBANK ARTIST

Born in 1995 in Cali, Colombia, Mayra Mateus, known professionally as Mateus Art, is a pop artist based in Miami. She discovered her artistic calling in 2016 while working as a cashier at a local pizzeria. She designed the restaurant’s menus and, in doing so, spawned her artistic spirit.

Later that same year, Mateus enrolled at Miami Dade College to formally study art. It was at MDC where she learned oil painting, realism, and landscape and animal art. Mateus quickly came to the realization that school was not for her. After some personal hardships that transformed her life, she dropped out of MDC on the premise that realism-style art was not fulfilling her.

As she grew in her self-peace, she also did with her connection to art. In 2017, she resonated with the street- and spray paint-style art of the vibrant Wynwood neighborhood of Miami. The colors, shapes, stories, and more of pop art were alluring to Mateus – she found her fulfillment and knew it was her calling.

The following year she took steps to professionalize her art and formed a corporation, brand, and trademark. She was inspired to create a brand around a piggy bank character and has created a portfolio of various mediums incorporating this symbol.

The message she portrays with piggy banks is “Saving Dreams”, where her intention is to remind people that pursuing dreams is more important than focusing on money.
